Several Indians I have talked to have a story to tell about being transported through a empty dark place. The majority of these stories happen around a campfire where the person goes to a different place and usually ends up back at the campfire. Me and my brother had quite a different experience.

My brother, Ricky, was driving us home from visiting some friends that had stopped in Knoxville while on vacation. We were both tired and all we wanted to do was get home. Ricky got my attention by telling me that something was going on he did not understand. Just after going through the traffic light in Maryville the car was being driven by something else. He demonstrated this by letting go of the steering wheel and taking his foot away from the pedals. The car continued to keep going and even went around a couple of curves. Ricky was amazed and then it happened. He looked over at me and said,”Nothing is out there.” I looked outside and could only see dark so I stuck my head out the window and looked where the headlights should be lighting the ground. Nothing, no background, no sign of anything, just empty darkness.

For some reason I was calm and telling my brother,” I would like to be home.” After a few seconds things began to appear in front of us and we were back on a road. Ricky began driving and trying to figure out where we were. Both of us recognized the surroundings and we were 30 miles closer to home but not on the same road we had been traveling. We were just outside of the town where we lived.

I have no way to explain how it happened. We had traveled 30 miles in a few seconds.

There you are on the front line
